How About Getting Your Scuba Training At A Freshwater Lake?

Blog

Scuba diving in the ocean appeals to many travelers. Flying to a far-off land to enjoy their time under the sea provides unforgettable experiences. But what if budget or other concerns make flying difficult? If you live quite far from a coastal state, it may seem you have nowhere to turn. Or, more fittingly, nowhere to dive. That might not be the case, as freshwater diving in lakes presents an option. Even those interested in advanced scuba diving certifications could look into freshwater dives.

A Basic Refresher Course

Access to freshwater lakes could help divers make use of their idle time. Some divers might already have their basic or advanced certification. However, they might find themselves going too long between dives and want to take a refresher course. Diving in a lake could be much more enjoyable than running a refresher course in a pool. A lake might provide the necessary "realism" of an open-water dive to make the event more memorable. And a lake could provide an excellent opportunity for various other advanced certifications.

Rescue Diving at a Lake

The "rescue diver" certification ranks as one people many people find valuable. Ocean-diving might not think that accidents happen in freshwater, as well. Lakes rely on rescue divers at times, and they could be excellent locations to complete a rescue diver certification. Of course, the necessary skills learned on the lake could apply to the ocean. Ask the instructor about any potential challenges or differences between lake and ocean rescue diving, if necessary.

Equipment Training

A lake could also be a worthwhile location when seeking equipment-based certifications. Drysuit or enriched air courses could take place in a lake. If you're putting off completing courses necessary for adventure diver or master diver rankings, consider taking them at a lake.

Lake-Centric Certifications

Some certifications might be more appropriate for lake divers. Ice diving would be challenging on the Atlantic or the Pacific oceans, as they don't freeze. A local upstate lake might, so it becomes the chosen point for diving. Ice diving isn't for everyone, though, as it is quite challenging. Other options exist for someone looking for the lake diving experience.

Booking the Lake Trip

Many dive centers run trips to lakes, so see which ones are closest to you. Perhaps traveling to a popular lakeside destination represents a plan, even one that's far away. Maybe it is time to change your "seafaring" approach to diving.
