What To Expect When Attending A Firearms Training Class

Blog

Taking a firearm class that offers basic training is an excellent place for new shooters to start for new shooters that are just starting, or are working toward getting a permit to carry. There are also advanced classes for experienced shooters that can help refine skills and improve accuracy.

Finding A Firearm Class

A firearm class is not difficult to find if you know where to look. A search online will help you located a class in your area and the contact information for the instructor hosting it. The listing should give you some information about the training class, including the training level required to attend, the cost, and what will be covered during training.

Some classes require you to bring your gun to the training so you can practice on a firearm you are familiar with. The majority of a basic firearm class is taught on the range, firing your gun. The instructor will typically require you to bring a specific amount of ammunition for your firearm on the day of the class, so you have the correct caliper.

Concealed Carry Training

In many states, you will need to take a firearm class if you are applying for a concealed firearm permit and carry a loaded gun with you in public. The training class will offer some advanced training that you will not get in a basic training class, and you will spend more time on the range, getting proficient with your firearm.

A permit to carry class will involve qualifying on the range with an instructor to prove you can find and hit targets accurately. If you need to use your gun in a live situation, the state wants to be sure that you can do so without bystanders getting hurt, so they will often set a minimum qualifying score, and if you don't hit it the first time, you will have to repeat that part of the class.

Firearm Laws

A firearm class at any level should include some time discussing the laws surrounding firearms and carry one on your person. From the basic ownership and transportation of the gun to concealed carry and when you can use your gun will all be covered.

The point of the firearm class is to make you a reasonable gun owner that can handle the firearm safely and understands the laws that come with ownership and use of a gun. The instructor teaching your class is an expert and can offer you advice, answer questions and train you to use your gun, but you will be ultimately responsible for it once you leave the class.

Make sure you understand all that you are taught in the classes and be sure to ask questions for clarification if you need it.
